Sugar, carbs, seed & vegetable oils and ultra processed foods all wreak havoc with our metabolism. Over time, consuming these foods will cause a whole host of health issues. Chief among these is chronic, systemic inflammation and insulin resistance. These two things will lead to a number of possible health consequences. Chronic inflammation is most dangerous to our mitochondria. All the cells in our body contain 1 or more mitochondria. The primary function of mitochondria is to monitor, repair or replace our cells. Normally our mitochondria is very efficient and burns oxygen and ATP for energy. Chronic inflammation however, stresses our mitochondria and can lead to damage that reduces or blocks it’s ability to burn oxygen properly. This leads to our mitochondria switching from burning oxygen and ATP to using fermentation to provide the energy it needs. This causes two issues. The first is that fermentation does not provide as much energy and the energy produced is not as effective. This begins to increase our use of sugar, causes damage to the mitochondria and in turn in can no longer properly repair and replace our damaged cells as necessary. This leads to a metabolic crises and also causes many other issues such as cancer, autoimmune disease, mental illness, brain damage and so on. If the mitochondria is damaged it can no longer heal our bodies and we get sicker.
This is why one of the first steps to healing is to stop using all of these damaging foods. Once we do this, our mitochondria can heal and in turn begin healing the rest of our health issues. Another major side effect of these damaging foods is to create insulin resistance. Insulin resistance will eventually turn into diabetes because our bodies have to produce more and more insulin to compensate for being less sensitive to it’s effects. Over time this will damage our pancreas and lead to type 1 diabetes. This will cause weight gain as well, because the excess sugar not being used gets converted to adipose tissue which is basically fat. Once enough weight is gained it can be extremely difficult to shed that weight. To dump that excess fat you have to stop providing it fuel in the form of sugar or carbs, which turn into sugar. Meat and fat are the most nutrient dense foods you can eat and if you eliminate everything except meat, fat, water and salt you begin the process of healing everything at the fastest possible speed. Even things like type 2 diabetes can be completely healed with this way of eating. That said, you can’t ever go back to eating sugar and carbs if you want to stay healed. There is a lot of controversy out there in the medical community about the safety and sustainability of a carnivore or ketogenic diet. Much of that controversy is driven by food manufactures. Big Pharma and other vested interests generate huge profits from manufactured foods, medicines and long term medical treatments. Most of the so called research out there is flawed, or outright fabricated by bad actors who pay for the results they want published. The only studies that actually prove cause and effect are randomized control trials. There are more of these coming out and every week and more are under way. This is changing the landscape of medicine, but it is happening very slowly. You can find links to some of this research and links to reputable books on health HERE.
